about

I sat down to write in my bedroom, and needed a book to use as a pad for paper. Happend to grab Patty Smith's book, "Just Kids", which is the thought I ran with that day. The song has nothing to do with Patty's book, just the idea, "just kids". I considerd changing the title of the song, but thought I'd rather tip my hat to Patty Smith.
This song is part autobiography and part fiction, just like almost everything...

lyrics

We're like a broken tradition
we're like a family without ties
full of lies and suspicion
We were just kids
living life like we did
we were sisters we were partners in crime
We made big plans, we'd move to the Canyon
Just like Joni, Mama Cass and Carol King
We got matching tattoos
cause that's what you do
when you're young and free your friends are everything
now we're like a broken tradition
we're like a family without ties
full of lies and suspicion
and I'm not sorry that I never said goodbye
and I won't ask for your forgiveness
I know that you won't ask for mine
that's just how it goes sometimes
yeah we were just kids
living life like we did
we'd talk of growing old together side by side
until that one day, along came Charlie
stole your heart but I was the one who got away
on the back of his bike
straight off to a new life
I never looked back
never looked back until today
now we're like a broken tradition
we're like a family without ties
full of lies and suspicion
and I'm not sorry that I never said goodbye
and I won't beg for your forgiveness
I know that you won't beg for mine
that's just how it goes sometimes
we try so hard
to leave it all behind
to leave it all behind
yeah leave it all behind
but you wrote a letter to my mother
to let her know that she should be ashamed
to raise a daughter, teach her what she taught her
me an Ma just laughed and fed it to the flames
I moved to the Canyon, you went on to marry him
you and Charlie living life so happily
yeah that's how it panned out
you got my man now
and I'm not sorry that I never said goodbye
now we're like a broken tradition
we're like a family without ties
full of lies and suspicion
and I'm not sorry that I never said goodbye
